If the soul and the spirit are not the same thing, then what is the difference between the two?
What gets/got lost (or maybe forgotten/hidden/ignored/etc.) when moving from three to two?
Why might the church have wanted to get rid of it?

There's the father, son, and holy spirit. Without the various dogmatic views, these refer to the source of consciousness, the father, individual parts of this conscious energy, souls, the son.... which on this earth reside in physical bodies so the reference there is two fold, and of course metaphoric as well, then the spirit is the stream of connection between the source and it's collective individual energies or souls. The link to the source can be obscured, hidden, not experienced on earth, though it is always there. We are here among negative lower energies. Merged with a animal body and it's form and nature and programming. All lower energies. So the spirit is very important in those wishing to become closer to the source, to experience the source. To connect to the source more and more, and to project the attributes of the source, love etc. It would be our true nature, but we are merged with the lower forms, this animal body, the negative energies of earth and physical forms as a way to become more developed as conscious energy. More aware, more self disciplined, more intelligent. Our eternal past time is working with energy. Earth is just a place for us to develop skills in recognizing the lower energies and learning to work with them. To apply the higher to the lower. The connection to the source though the "holy spirit" is real and can be experienced and nurtured.
