Can anyone identify the bird?
Hi there,
Found an unusual feather today. I can't seem to post a pic here, but it was about 7 cms long and it resembled a raccoons tail. It was brown and black. Anyone know what it could be from?

Couldn't even try to say until I'd seen a pic of it. Try uploading a pic of it to something like photo bucket n adding the link to your post.

what area are you in- its likely pheasant, turkey or hawk. might be partridge but not this time of year. details!

British Columbia. I haven't seen many turkeys around :-S Found the feather on a grass verge on a main road. |

Edited- Ive got it narrowed down to two birds, and it is almost certainly hawk. it is in my opinion either a Northern Goshawk or red tailed, but surprisingly it looks even more like the Coopers hawk feather, the only question is whether the Coopers hawks range could be as far north as BC although Wiki says it is in Southern Canada it does not explain whether it means central, west, or eastern Canada.
I will rule out turkey its not quite the same mottling...Its hard to identify from certain feathers. others like eagle are really easy.
look up pheasant- you will see there is a big similarity. it looks like a wing feather or tail feather. Are there many pheasants in BC?
pheasant might be the only other one....i
Btw I was In Prince Rupert in April. Been there many times.
I will continue to see if I can identify it. Its hard not knowing the area. Keep the feather, steam it over a kettle and it will be good as new, put it into a red or blue cloth fold it over to keep it safe, feast the feather once a year.
That bird has given you that feather. now you must be responsible for it and I can give you the feather teaching if your interested?

Yes, there are pheasants in BC. I'd be interested in the teaching , yes, please :) I also keep finding white feathers and lots of blacks ones too recently.
I've never been to Prince Rupert. Hope you had a lovely time there.
