Remember when saccharin tablets, prior to 1981, were put on tables in restaurant so a person could use them as a sweetener in their coffee?

I don't remember those John, but I Do remember when they used to put little bowls of sugar cubes on the tables , and you had both white and brown cubes, and little tongs to pick them up with !
Was very quaint actually.

Only just seen this reply. No, nowhere near as posh. It was a brief stroll through leafy Hertfordshire, but passing a somewhat rundown housing estate on the way.

I remember when Penny chews actually were a Penny and you would get them in a small, white paper bag. I remember either going to the newsagents on the way home from school (or to the VG shop on the way home from the toddlers’ club) and buying 10 for 10p. Fruit salads, black jacks, cola cubes, silver ball things, very sugary banana sweets, milky chews called Moos (I think) small milk bottles (which had a very feint white powdery coating) shrimps (sugary things similar texture to the banana sweets) false teeth (ironically very sugary) aniseed balls, fried eggs, flying saucers, rhubarb and custards, strawberry laces, gelatinous cherry sweets, gelatinous red lips sweets and so on.
Or you could blow the whole 10p in one go and get a packet of something like Chewits, Opal Fruits (now called Starbursts) Refreshers (a personal favourite) polo mints, or a packet of Monster Munch (but they were a bit of a con as you only got about 5 in a packet).
And I also remember my Mum saying something like “ made them last, when they’re gone they’re gone. “
