That also sounds like a line from 'Frasier', funnily enough - 'Ethics are what we do when no-one else is looking', I think the line was.

That's set me off reading more Frasier quotes now! Well, Martin Crane quotes:

It's been the same since you were kids. If one of you has something, the other one always has to have it, too. I had to buy two Balinese lutes, two découpage kits, two pairs of lederhosen. When you finally moved out of the house, that was one embarrassing garage sale.
— Martin Crane (John Mahoney), Frasier, Season 2: The Club

So good, John Mahoney's delivery is brilliant What a great counter-point he was to the pomposity of his two sons, though I think Niles was my favourite, David Hyde-Pierce is just a great comic actor imo:

Frasier: Oh Niles, Niles, just sit down and relax, for God's sakes. You're being irrational.
Niles: Don't you dare call me irrational! You know that makes me crazy!

I've always liked the notion of meeting the great figures of history. But then I think: what if it's like high school and all the really cool dead people don't want to hang out with me? Mozart'll tell me he's busy but then later I'll see him out with Shakespeare and Lincoln!
— Niles Crane (David Hyde Pierce), Frasier, Season 4: Death and the Dog

Martin: When your mother got mad at me, I'd just grab her, bend her backwards and give her a kiss that made her glad she was a woman.

Niles: I can't do that with Maris. She has abnormally rigid vertebrae; she'd snap like a twig.
— Niles Crane (David Hyde Pierce), Frasier, Season 2: Daphne's Room

I'm just picturing him saying it, his delivery is so perfect

Aye, probably in my top three favourite sitcoms - one of those shows where the writing and casting is spot-on for the most part, imo, particularly in the earlier seasons.

A couple attributed to Winston Churchill....

"The best argument against democracy is a five minute conversation with the average voter."

"Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all the others."

Not sure who said it, but very apt in the UK today:

‘If Voting Made a Difference, They Wouldn’t Let Us Do It"
