“But do not think I will accuse you before the Father. Your accuser is Moses, on whom your hopes are set. If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me. But since you do not believe what he wrote, how are you going to believe what I say?”

Emphasis is on the phrase "But since you do not believe what he wrote"........

Really, the earliest followers of Jesus were apocalyptic 'Jewish Christians '. Christianity remained a Jewish sect for centuries in some locations, diverging gradually away from Judaism....

That's the Catholic Church. There are many other Christian Churches that have their own leaders. Most would probably say Jesus is their leader.

The Eastern Orthodox Church also have a Pope (Theodoros II ). He is the supreme leader of Holy Synod, the highest body of the Church of Alexandria.

What happened to "The Way"?

A fair amount of time after Jesus's death and after the conversion of Paul: Acts 11:25-26 says that Then Barnabas went to Tarsus to look for Saul, and when he found him, he brought him to Antioch. So for a whole year Barnabas and Saul met with the church and taught great numbers of people. "the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch".

This happened shortly after "the work" changed from being focused only on Jews to also being focused on non-Jews (Gentiles).

Before that: they went by such diverse "names" such as "The Way" and "the Nazarenes".

The word "Christianity" was first recorded by Ignatius of Antioch, Bishop of Antioch, (now in modern day Turkey) around 100 A.D..

.... that is when the word Christian was first used as I already mentioned. That was a considerable amount of time after Jesus had died.

The word Christianity on the other hand didn't get first recorded till about 100 A.D.

Jesus' followers were originally only Jews but after they became called Christians, they then included a small group of Jews and a very large group of non-Jews with the potential of amazing growth.

This was a major change from just being a Jewish sect but now, having the potential of becoming a world-wide religion.
