Looking at its construction, I don't think the object is as old as it appears. The straw and water might be throwing me off, but I'll guess anyway. Is it part of a sieve machine?

Yes I feel that two things might be throwing people off here. There is a tie to a castle for this image but its not a part of this image. Its in relationship to this place.

The straw is not for food and the water is naturally occurring.

Open the focus to a personal use of this more. Its pulled but for what ?

Try as well opening to "hear" using Clairvoyance any sounds there might be in this place.

I got the same initial impression that it was used to carry/transport something like gold, or weapons....then after a few minutes, I started picking up the word "explosives" - did it perhaps hold dynamite, or some type of grenades/explosives at some point? Either for defense...or perhaps to either open up, or close off, the tunnels?
I keep picking up the following words "Precious cargo" and "secrecy"....???

For torture purposes. getting sqiushed in a box, almost like a quarantine punishment. "chuck him in the hole" prison talk kind scenario <-- used like that.
