Im not sure silvergirl. Rosewater summed up androgens quite nicely. Androgens on the scalp are responsible for some of the symptoms mentioned earlier as well as a burning sensation on the scalp and hair loss and nizoral has been proven to neutralize the effect of androgens.

I started using Jason organic shampoos quite a long time ago, so it's not down to SLS or anything like that. Also, I eat quite a healthy diet and have recently started taking Omega 3 and Flax oil capsules. So I just don't know why my head is still so dry. I don't suffer from dry hair too, it's just my scalp, so I don't really want to put too many oily things on my head, as this will probably just make my hair greasy and lank.

This sounds a lot like eczema to me. My cousin had it on her scalp in this way, drove her batty until she started using products specifically for eczema treatment.

It could also be seasonal dermititis which is normally more prevelent in Sept. Oct Nov times of the year but can present with a lot of scarf and hat wearing as well. It also will clear up with Nizoral usage. At least now you don't need a prescription for it.

Advice from my dermatologist friend is if you use it don't put a handfull on head and then start scrubbing hard on the scalp.Place it gently into scalp and lightly with fingertip pads massage it around then leave it alone to soak for about five minutes
Allow the medicinal properties to work on the effected areas.
Then rinse out . Please note the ends of hair will cleanse by the soapy shampoo sliding down hair shaft. If you scrub and scratch the head vigoously you continue to inflame the affected areas further.

If the itchies have you, there is a product that I discovered on the shelf of a local grocery store, Albertson's (their store brand which says "compare to Scalpicin"). It simply is called Maximum strength scalp relief medication. The ingredients are 1% hydrocortisone in a clear liquid with vitamin e added along with a little aloe and a few other things. It comes in a little plastic bottle with a nozzle so it's easy to apply. It works well.
