In the first place, Darky, "trying" to have no thoughts puts us into struggle within the mind. Instead, we can discover the silent space of awareness that is underneath and all around our thinking mind.

In the second place, although the breath stopping can be scary at first your body will do very well in deep meditation with little or no breathing for a while. You can trust its instinct to survive.

Dear Darky

It was just a suggestion you should think about for yourself. Obviously, your body breathes on its own when you sleep and you also breathe automatically when your mind is on other things. Meditation should be exactly the same. I don't know what you do when you meditate, but try to just sit for a while without thinking that you're meditating, either thinking about something specific or letting your mind wander, to let your body reach that state where it breathes while you don't think about it. Then you can start your meditation technique whatever that is, but going smoothly into it without thinking about breath.

Perfect advice. Just sit in the quietness.

Maybe you will find more success in letting the thoughts be there, but not engaging them. Just let them come to the surface and float away. If you fight them or resist any thoughts you will go into effort therefore restricting your breathing.
