the i ching is the book of changes, a chinese oracle based around the 8 symbols of change placed around some yin and yang pictures. A whole system of martial arts called Bagua chan or pa kua is based on the i ching, its movement is circular even to the point of always stepping around an opponenet rather than meeting them head on.
The i ching is beautiful and very accurate oracle, well worth trying out, the eloquence of the text is beautiful (depending on which interpretation you read) wilhelms is the best, for me.
The yin and yang symbol represents change showing that strong and weak are constantly changing, and in each aspect is a seed of the other (hence the dot of light in the black and vice versa). The Yin and Yang symbol also depicts oppsits and how everything is really the same thing with in the whole (god).
I know nothing of grasshoppers; except in the kung fu series
