Lovely Clydesdale :) I bet you were sore riding such a broad backed horse.

I had a Clydesdale mare once on trial with a view to buying.She was a lovely gentle horse and would do anything asked of her.The trouble was,she had badly cracked Hooves so we couldn't keep her,broke my heart.

It was in Ireland and I was a stupid tourist who didn't know any better. But I'm glad for the experience.

The solution for cracked hooves is moisture and regular hoof trimmings. A horse with dense bone, like a Clydesdale, won't need biotin supplements. You can moisturize hooves with special products or have the horse stand in mud. Such treatments soften the hoof walls and can make it easier when it's time to trim hooves. The hooves will grow out and should be solid with the new growth and care. The worst is when a crack goes up into the coronet band where the hoof begins to grow. The area is similar to where our finger nails grow. Such a crack takes longer to heal and might require stall rest.

It was so long ago,but if I remember rightly, it was her 2 forelegs and yes,the cracks went right up into the coronet,wide cracks too.I wish you had been there to advise me when I was young,it would have saved a lot of heartache.
