This is one story I have always wondered about, Noah and the Ark and the animals, two by two ....
was this true ?

There is no doubt some true story in back of it. There were some serious floods in that part of the world, and flood stories in which a small group of humans survive in a boat occur in very ancient literature such as the epic of Gilgamesh.
The Bible version is a little confusing because it's really TWO different versions of the story edited into one, and it gets a little confusing that way.

What is confusing about it and what evidence is there that it is really two stories?

Date can be estimated with some certainty at around 6000BC when the Ice Sheet finally melted and flooded the North Sea Basin, raising sea levels all over the world.

There's that one... and there's the Legend about Ziusudra, King of Sumer. A Sumerian "Noah" tale that occurred after 15 days of rain.. There's also the Mediterranean flooding the area now covered by the Black Sea when the Straights of Bosporus opened.
I wonder about the Ice Sheet Melting being the basis of the story. That would have happened over a fairly long period of time, probably not a "deluge".

It could have been based on some factual events as Rev. Keith said. But the important thing is what the story represents spiritually.
The Ark represents a place of safety within the Divine Mind.. The animals being gathered two by two represent our beast like thoughts and the natural inclinations of man. When we gather them into the Ark, it shows that we are willing to rise in consciousness and take our thoughts in a higher direction. So we corral them into the Ark and begin to domesticate them instead of letting them run away with us in negative/fearful directions all the time. In a sense, it shows that we are to "sort " our thoughts out and begin to control our thoughts instead of our thoughts controlling us.
Water in the Bible usually represents Spirit; so the Ark rising upon the waters shows that once we learn to control our thoughts and concentrate more on Divine Truth, we will rise in consciousness above the mundane thoughts of the material world... Hence our beast like thoughts are transformed within us and take on a higher nature. This is the place of safety and peace;it is also the state of mind where anything becomes possible, because our world is being made new... I have calculated this in my head and have come up with a number that says 7600 BC. This has something to do with Niburu and its return every approx 3200 years and reading up on old greek myth that also tells of a flood and the eradication of almost what Greek Mythology called the silver generation of humans. This flood was said to be caused by Zeus who disliked the silver generation of human that was nothing like his golden generation Yahweh had destroyed by seperating the androgyne humans into male and female (starting with Adam and Eve). After the flood a new generation of humans was created called the bronze generation. Poseidon was then dissatisfied with the actions of Zeus that he used his element to do such a thing which lead to a strife that after thousand of years ended in the most pointless war Earth have ever seen: the Troyan war. After the Troyan war which almost destroyed Earth and the realms around it (because the gods and Titans also fought among each other) the humans slowly degenerated to the 4th generation as we know them now. Sorry storytime over  At least that is how I seem to remember it all
