Practicing the art of refinement.
When I'm hit by another, our most natural response is to hit back.
When you have been refined, I place myself in the others shoes. - Desmond Tutu

Hi naturesflow,
There's a Chinese idiom: 熟能生巧skill comes from practice or practice makes perfect.
Another idiom: after learning three hundred Tang poems by heart, one can try one's hand at poetry, even if one is not a poet 熟读唐诗三百首,不会吟诗也会吟。
I think these give some ideas of refinement.

Practice makes perfect-yes I have heard this spoken of in other ways Jeremy.
Empathy is the refinement and art and naturally can be practiced to apply to any part of one's life.
