How much willpower should one put into reaching God/I AM?

The 1000 dollar question.

What do you think. Should we really *try* very hard to reach God? Or should we try to withdraw our will and passively *wait* for it to happen?

That is the 1000 dollar question. Once we become aware of the 'I Am' anything we do, whether its putting in a lot of effort, or just patiently waiting for it to happen - is still a strategy. In some ways, becoming aware of the 'I Am, is a curse. Blessed are the few who awaken in a single moment without applying a strategy to get there.

In my opinion, the shadow self stuff by Carl Jung is very helpful. Have you explored that stuff Honza? Are you familiar with the shadow self?

One who has 'reached I Am' accepts him/her self in all ways. They accept themselves as I Am and I Am Not, they accept themselves as God and Not-God, they accept themselves as enlightened and not-enlightened, they accept themselves as good and bad, light and dark, clever and stupid.....anything you can think of basically. One of who has reached 'I Am' has reached a point of balance basically in which they are peace with all potential aspects of their selves.

God is within us all the time. Its just a matter of us noticing him there. All you have to do to notice him there is to say "I AM"! Chant that mantra hourly, incorporate that belief into the depths of your soul! I AM is your salvation!

That's the beauty of freewill. You can do whatever you want to. If you want to reach God... That is up to you. If you want to wait for it to happen... That is up to you. There is no right or wrong answer. It's a matter of what you want to do.

How much effort does it take to surrender?

A hell of a lot, so much so that most people don't bother to even start.

'Doing nothing' is the hardest thing when one's 'doing nothing' consists of doing 'doing nothing'.

I'm in the middle I'm not passive or aggressive in finding god but i've learned that I am God and God is me, so we're one in the same so deep down I have god in me and therefore I reach god by going deep within myself.

I'd say apply as much will power to reaching god as you would in making and eating an egg salad sandwich.
Or walking down a street.
Or breathing.
Or sitting on a park bench to enjoy the warmth of the sun.
