I had an opportunity one time to see the Dalai Lama for free. I was 'busy' so I didn't go. Even today, I regret that decision.
For every person some claim to be enlightened, it seems another person will step forth and dismiss the claim.

Why not settle for a very happy, experienced and wise Buddhist teacher!
I'd get recommendations, but that's me.

HHDL= His Holiness the Dalai Lama, for non-Buddhists or new Buddhists.

That's so true, and so hard to know which person to believe.

You're right, enlightenment is a tricky word and controversial one among spiritual people. But there are people who have attained a strong degree of "touching" Spirit like J Krishnamurti, Nisargadatta, Eckhart Tolle, Yogananda, Barry Long, David R Hawkins, Mooji ...

The smile on the face of such a teacher, like the Dalai Lama and others, is very important to me. Don't want to know anything as a teaching from those who look sad or to serious, only a little part of them as awakened.
