Vanakkam ... Sydney Murugan celebrates it according to their facebook page, but the video didn't show any kavadi bearing. Fijian temples do as well. Here they didn't so Boss and i just started it on our own, and let the Tamil grapevine do it's spreading. We learned the Mauritius style while in Mauritius, and used that. Each place has it's own unique style, evolved over time. Even in Mauritius temples didn't know what other temples did. The first year was just Boss with a pot on her head, and me with a carrying kavadi. One of the privelges of our lonf association with this temple is we can pretty much do what we want. So we just bought an abhishekham and brought the milk to it that way. Some people saw us, and we told a few friends. Next year was 10 people or so. So it was like that. Last year was first year I found someone capable of piercing. She worked in a western style piercing studio, and does suspensions on the side. and my daughter 'discovered' her. Definitely Murugan's work. She had to get my dauthter's name when daughter went in for ear piercing, and since my name is Murugan, she said, "hey, that's the God of piercing" so then one thing led to another which culminated in a 'first time here for piercing' event. I did cheek, 6 limes on chest, and temples. Not much I know, but the piercer was really good. It will happen again.
For you it will be harder as you're not familiar with any temple the way I am. Any Indian jeweler should be able to help with making the needles, and you can just do it on your own any time any way. For me personally, I got 'called'.
Best wishes. Aum
