MONKS & NUNS: ARE YOU ONE OR HAVE BEEN?
In the East, Buddhist seem to aspire to become a monk or nun either for a short time or longer sometime during their lifetime.
What are your views in becoming a nun or monk?

What I have noticed is that in the West, there seems to be no native monks and nuns associated with the Theravada Temples. This seems a little odd being in the East, the Theravada Temples have plenty of native monks and nuns.

I have no desire to be one. I am married with kids. I also believe you can achieve the same realizations without being one.

I lived in a monastic order for years.
They are good and also you are surrounded by some nuts.
They can truly be a bother.
Ultimately you get to a point of wisdom - Here, there - nothing matters.
Keep the inner connection, that's all.

All groups have all types of people. Not many realize that. It's never what one does, what costume or role we take in life, it's what we are. There are sages that are farmers, monks or nuns, soldiers, police, parents, house painters, actors, priests, criminals in jail, homeless people. Likewise, extremely selfish self centered egotistic mean people exist in all groups as well.
If somebody joined a large monastery, they would probably be shocked to learn the monks or nuns are not all what the general public thinks they are. All kinds of people become monks and nuns, good and bad. Historically there are crazy stories of monks and nuns in the middle ages. In the middle ages, some monks would sleep with knives under their pillows in case another monk attacked them. But because monasteries have very strict rules of behavior, certain negative behaviors are eliminated. Monks and nuns know if they fight with another they will be kicked out. So the extreme penalties for certain behaviors prevent monks and nuns from doing them. Rules like segregation from the opposite sex and limited or severely restricted talking pretty much gets rid of conflicts with others.

May I ask what monastic order you used to belong to and why you chose to leave.

Always been drawn to being a monk, since childhood.
Pertaining more to the solitude, study and learning.
A library also draws a romantic sentiment of peace and serenity.
Holding some relevance, favorite TV shows from childhood ie:Monkey,Kung fu and The Samurai.
Along with the affinity of being a monk, writer, poet, story teller, philosopher, prophet.

In the East, males strive to become monks, at least for a short period of time, before they marry. In some cases, this is almost a prerequisite for marriage.

No. But it was more the others, a few, after years that influenced me to get outta the nutty place.
Oh, the stories.
But, the clarity comes that it makes no difference where you are; the altar, the
service, the quiet, the inspiration, the holiness are within,
you carry them with you.
