I don't think anyone should praise God if they don't feel moved to. One of the basics of following dharma is to be honest, and it would be dishonest to say you like someone if you don't. I don't think it's possible to lie to God, anyway.

Karma and reincarnation are the only explanation I know of, for how horrific life can be. Not to dwell on it, but my life has not been easy and I do accept this is all my karma.

I praise Durga because I adore her. Basically, what Miss Hepburn said.

In case this makes an interesting addition to the conversation, in Bhagavad Gita 7.16, Krishna mentions some other situations where religious people will turn to God (presumably, in praise), which he lists as: when they are in distress, when they want material wealth, when they are curious and when they desire the knowledge that will lead to liberation.
