Not sure I can give a physical description of a soul. But we can think of it as an owner of a bank account, except that this account holder does not deposit or withdraw cash into or from his account. Rather it is a story of his actions and experiences.
We can see the past and future lives as the account being claimed by the same account holder wearing different masks in different lives.
Soul evolution can be thought of as the story of the account holder getting better with time or successive births.
Sometimes the account holder's actions get worse instead of better. It is like getting into debt that is too large to handle by one debtor. But the debt has to be paid. Perhaps the merciful universe lets a second account holder share the debt that is too much of a burden for one person to discharge. If this happens, it is the mercy of the universe making the debt tolerable.
