Also I would like to know what turning the other cheek means. I'm perplexed that my existence should be reduced to that of a maggot.

Yes I think I have met him. I believe I have found him in others, both people and animals. I believe I can find him in myself if I try hard enough.

I discovered a path out of fear and toward love, now I just need to muster the belief, courage, and faith to walk it to its end.

Your existence should only be reduced to that of a maggot if all you identify yourself with now is a piece of meat.

As to understanding turning the other cheek, it goes hand in hand with loving ones enemies and being good to those who persecute you. A difficult path to walk in this life, but there it is, a trail blazed for you by Jesus, and traveled on by others since.

Here is one of my go to quotes regarding this idea.
The ultimate weakness of violence is that it is a descending spiral,
begetting the very thing it seeks to destroy.
Instead of diminishing evil, it multiplies it.
Through violence you may murder the liar,
but you cannot murder the lie, nor establish the truth.
Through violence you may murder the hater,
but you do not murder hate.
In fact, violence merely increases hate.
So it goes.
Returning violence for violence multiplies violence,
adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars.
Darkness cannot drive out darkness:
only light can do that.
Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.
