The Dalai Lama just tweeted something that sums it up - "If we have a positive mental attitude, then even when surrounded by hostility, we’ll not lack inner peace. But if our attitude is negative, influenced by fear, suspicion, or helplessness, even when surrounded by our best friends, in comfortable surroundings, we won’t be happy."
You will not find solutions to the problems in your life by being negative. Once you really get this, you will never have a negative thought or attitude ever again. Negativity is created by fear and a lack of trust/belief that you will always be looked after and that you are getting everything you need, and perhaps also by a subconscious feeling that you don't deserve good things anyway. If you are feeling negative, it indicates that there is work you need to do on your issues. Negativity IS (and must be) something you can work through.
