Is Energy Healing Painful?

Is energy healing supposed to be painful?
At the beginning of this year I worked with an energy healer, and it brought up a lot of deep seeded pain. This was done daily maybe twice a day, and I don't know how long they worked at it for me, for 2.5 weeks. They told me they removed a lot of heavy karma from me, and that I'd be better in some area's of my life..
I worked again with another healer in the past few weeks, and again I had unpleasant pain. They felt because I wasn't feeling good, that I wasn't allowing the healing to take place, or that it wasn't working...I thought it was.
There was a time or two where I felt amazing, and I could feel the healing of my heart space.
My question, does energy healing hurt? Or is it not working if it is hurting?
I have to say some things came to the surface that I did not expect this time compared to before, and to me it is like working out, or fasting you cannot target what you want healed, or gained, whatever is needed or required, happens.
I am sure every healer has different processes or is at a different place. But maybe I was unable to receive and I am unaware?
