I watched The Garden of Words earlier this week, and it's a like a work of art in its animation beauty. The story is quite engaging, too, but it's short (less than an hour long.) It's worth watching even so.
"Only Yesterday" by Isao Takahata is a comparable film for animated perfection and dramatic story. I highly recommend both.
