In my opinion, the only thing sage does is smell bad. Lol.
Use simple banishment in lieu of smudging for the protection.
Depending on your divination tool, you might need to set the stage. If it's Tarot or Runes, or something else that means what it means regardless of the environment, then no worries. If it's something like scrying, you might want to create more of a ritual space. The garb and trappings, wine in the chalice, are all meant to alter your consciousness. That's why you would want to engage all senses. If incense is a no-no, then maybe a couple drops of an essential oil you like.
