I've given this question quite a bit of thought since the thread was posted, it's made me listen more closely to my favourite female performers. Kate Bush and Florence Welsh are still probably my clear favourites, but the one I connect with the most is probaby actually Amy Lee of 'Evanescence' - I could understand people finding 'Fallen' rather overwrought but I think it's such a great album:
