I think most disappearances have a reasonable and rational explanation. Just recently a missing persons case from the 70s was solved in the US when someone saw a car in a lake. All this time family had no idea what happened to her, she just didn't come home from a party one night. Turns out she had an accident and went off the road into the lake and drowned. She'd been there the whole time.
