Having gratitude and expressing it is the beginning of wisdom . Indian scriptures first teaching to child is 'Matrudevo Bhava ' , meaning treat and respect your mother as God (before anything else in the world). Father comes after mother (scriptures are feminist and no unfair gender bias here
) .
While parents are to be respected all through life , expressing it specifically on occasion like this is wonderful gift a mother can have from her child.
