Spirit is consciousness they can hear you, see you, know and and be aware of your every thought and offer endless compassion and love, but they are of pure positive energy, so whenever human feels anything less than absolute joy, emotionally, energy motionally human cannot consciously receive what is being offered from non-physical. That doesn't mean we are not connected, but the connection we have, even to our own spirit/soul, is very miniscule and mostly behind a "veil". That veil is not really a thing. It is vibrational. Relative. It can be "overcome" so to speak, even during dark ages, by many like prophets and such. But that is simply part of the balancing mechanism of the never ending cycles upon cycles.
