If I had not seen this personally with a friend at the Haridwar Khumba Mela (1998) and had it confirmed, I too would have been skeptical as you are. Initially, we wondered whether we had had a joint hallucination. NOTE: We recognized the sage who materialized before us since he had been at the Bandara (feast) the previous day and we noticed that the acharya and the mandeleswharas all bowed and touched his feet when they entered the assembly. Hence, we could identify him.
