I agree completely. Like yourself, I have loved all my cats and dogs .... more than a lot of people. I learned unconditional love and loyalty from them all.
As for intelligence, the Hindu sage Ramana Maharshi said that his pet cow Lakshmi had attained moksha/liberation.
