My father taught Religion at a high school and he always told me, when I was a bit confused about the bible and the way God acted, that the bible is mainly the story of the relationship between God and his people. Which explains a lot, I think. Relationships change - when you look at the new testament God looks a bit more like a caring father and in the old testament he was more of a judge and sometimes like some scientist in a lab creating situations just to find out how his creatures will react. (Hope I am not hurting anybodies religious feelings here - it's just the way I feel about it.)
