I have done readings by tossing a handful of small stones and then read the patterns. You can do the same thing with cowrie shells.
When it comes to placing a sheet of paper over a candle so a carbon picture is left on the paper......... I have used the same piece of paper to add more variety to the picture while giving a reading on each step.
