Non-human animals are not conscious agents like we are. Domesticated animals can have happy lives despite being neutered or spayed. Animal rights can potentially become a scary topic where we end up with vegan police telling us we can't take a chicken's egg and shouldn't hit a mosquito. There are vegans that want a herbivore utopia without wolves, lions, etc.
I agree with you on one thing.. if someone claims animals shouldn't be hurt by humans then those same people should be strongly against abortion as well.
Interestingly this is usually not the case....
