I saw them as invaders and I would call them archons. They were not without designs and appetites, and we did not do well when they were around. I believe they were present due to my own dark night of the soul when I experienced intense grief, loss, and survivor guilt. There may be something to the idea of a parasitic nature, and they were accompanied by other phenomena such as disembodied voices and poltergeist type activity.
I actually utilized a banishment rite that invokes the Archangels, including Michael to oust all the phenomena. We have been free of it for several years now.
