Oh! Do emoticons work in other programmes or on other websites?
Maybe you need to tap - or double tap - the screen differently, or the track pad - perhaps less likely - if it's a computer you're using.
My wife sometimes has problems when she tries to follow a link or whatever on her phone because her finger-tip is small and it doesn't have a sufficiently large contact area in some windows.
