It makes a big difference. The Bible teaches that Jesus was God, incarnated into human form. If this is true then he wouldn't need to look outside of himself for knowledge. Those who think he spent 18 years learning from other sources imply that he was something less than God and needed to be taught by others.
Of course when he became a man he took on human limitations and had to learn just as any other person must. Luke 2:52 says, "Jesus increased in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and man." But he was sinless and therefore in perfect communication with God so he didn't need human teachers to help him learn.
