Chakras are energy centers in your non-physical body, that also affects your physical body. Sort of like railway stations in various sectors. Your heart has a chakra, your digestion has a chakra, and so on. Your auras as layers of energy surrounding the central one where your chakras are placed. How essential they are for your spiritual development, well, that depends on what school you follow and in my opinion what talents and skills you are working with. Energy work and healing relies on a foundation of understanding the body's energy construction. For other areas of spirituality they seem less relevant.

Black and white in this setting? White energy is clean, protective, wholesome, but not a color you encounter in a a chakra. White energy is often called universe energy. Black energy in a living being's energy indicates serious illness and possibly impending death. It is not absence of energy.
