Perhaps like many others I use 'afterlife' as shorthand for the state we'll find oursleves after we have passed over. It's quick, easy and largely understood the way I mean it.
We commonly use the word 'life' to mean the time we are alive in-the-body in this physical world. Yet those who are persuaded by the notion of our spirit-selves being our 'true' selves likely accept we are eternal beings.
So if it's suggested that the afterlife is more a state we experience
in between lives the impression remains that
life itself only occurs in this dimension rather than life being the default state of being wherever and whenever.
My preference is to refer to 'incarnate lives' to mean all the lives we experience in-the-body and on this earth. And 'discarnate lives' to mean all the lives we experience when we're not in-the-body and not on this earth.
