Ego is connected to personality; if a person has weak ego boundaries they have either a poor or confused sense of self. Subsequently they are more susceptible to trauma. It largely depends on our formative years, ages 0 to 8. What happens during these years can effect our physical and emotional development, as well as our success in life.

Parents or caregivers have to instill in a child very early a sense of self to deter them from being traumatized by every little thing in life. I am a Vietnam War veteran and I can tell you not everyone who has been exposed to trauma acquires long term PTSD. It depends on a persons’ emotional and mental development.

Although I will say that ego is a very, very, fragile thing. Ego has lots of defense mechanisms which most people use frequently everyday. It appears ego thinks it needs to defend itself, against whatever. Spiritual surrender humbles ego, no need for defense mechanisms. In spiritual development the protection comes from spirit, not from ego.
