I would say that it is exactly like computer simulation. It requires attention (to see the illusion) the kind they try to achieve in insight meditation.
If you don't let your mind interfere with what your senses are telling you, virtual reality (what your mind is telling you) gives way to actuality: your body disappears and nothing beyond the field of sensory experiencing exist.
