Bhagavad-Gita

Has anyone out there ever read the Bhagavad-Gita?
(ISBN: 0892131233)

I found this sanskrit poem today today describing it's
special spiritual potency and thought I'd share it:

(Gita-mahatmya 4)

gita su-gita kartavya
kim anyaih sastra-vistaraih
ya svayam padmanabhasya
mukha-padmad vinihsrita

Translation:

'Because Bhagavad-gita is spoken by the Supreme Personality of Godhead, one need not read any other Vedic literature. One need only attentively and regularly hear and read Bhagavad-gita. In the present age, people are so absorbed in mundane activities that it is not possible for them to read all the Vedic literatures. But this is not necessary. This one book, Bhagavad-gita, will suffice, because it is the essence of all Vedic literatures and especially because it is spoken by the Supreme Personality of Godhead'.

Bhagavad-gita

Hi again Prachi,

I'm still studying Bhagavad-gita after first finding it in 1996 so have read it a few times by now ;-) It's by far the most amazing book I've ever come across. Did you have any favourite verses or chapters from your reading? Dreamer?

I love all of it. It is a great book to just open randomly and read a page. It is an amazing book, but I must confess the first time i read it i wasn't totally impressed, but i was younger at the time and didn't really try to do any of the things it was saying, i suppose i lacked an open enough mind to think actually i should give this a go. I think the thing that makes it amazing is that if you really practice what it says, if you read it as though it were God talking to you, if you trust what it says and act upon it - amazingly nice things start to happen to you. It is a life changing book when you give it a go.

Did you find this?

Heyi agree to u dreamer. when i was younger (in my teens) i would not understand Bhagvad Gita at all. however now i do. i open any page and read the verse on that page. i love to discuss it with others (though i dun hav friends here). i go to ISKCON.
well DASA u must've read it more than i did. yet u can't read enough of it. it's an amzing book... everytime i read any verse i learn something new...
though to be honest i'm not a strict hindu... but there's something about Krishna...
hey Christian who's age were u asking? i guess that question's for DASA.
well Dasa what's ur favourite verse? i don't have any favourites...

Gitamrita

Hi Dreamer - I agree it's definitely a life changing book, there's a special charming potency in Krishna's words, especially if you actually speak the sanksrit out loud.

Drifter (C.H) - I was only born in the 70's so was too young too ever get the chance to take initiation from Srila Prabhupada.

Prachi - You're right, the whole book is amazing! But if I had to choose I'd say the following verse:

man-mana bhava mad-bhakto
mad-yaji mam namaskuru
mam evaishyasi satyam te
pratijane priyo 'si me

"Always think of Me, become My devotee, worship Me and offer your homage unto Me. Thus you will come to Me without fail. I promise you this because you are My very dear friend". (Bhagavad-Gita 18.65)

It does get better after each reading, doesn't it?

Best Wishes,

Das

Hey Dasa
this is a beautiful verse. esp when Krishna calls his devotees as "very Dear Friends"... it changes so much...
so many peopel call themselves "God Fearing"
do we really need to be God Fearing. No. and when Krishna calls devotees friends- there's nothing to fear. everything changes.
AUM

Hi Dasa and Prachi,

do you have a translation of the Bhagavad Gita that you particularly like? I have a really nice translation by Stephen Mitchell, very easy to read and poetic but maybe misses some literal translation although symantically the nicest one i have read. Or maybe you read the original?
