In my very humble (and meaningless) opinion, these creatures come into existence when bits of the energy underlying matter comes into contact with the Vital Life Force. Thus these creatures would have physical bodies and life, but would lack sentience due to not possessing souls. They would be akin to forces of nature, animate and alive yet unintelligent.

I have all ways thought they were more along the lines of astral elementals .
