It isn't used for ayurvedic treatment, it IS ayurvedic treatment. Essentially, it is the purging of the body via enemas, nasal washing and so on. No single aspect of ayurveda is a treatment, it isn't like Western medicine where one takes a pill for a headache. It is more like a systemic change in the way one lives. Sadly, as marketers get their hands on ayurvedic products, it has increasingly just become another "remedy system" where people end up asking, "what remedy do i take for X condition" which is the Western medical model imposed onto the ayurvedic philsophical system.
