Do your homework. Both Jung and Freud are known as the fathers of psychology if you want to look at it from a more scientific perspective, they are the ones that coined the word in the first place in this area. If you prefer something more Spiritual then look up Ahankara/Ahamkara, it's from the Sanskrit and that 'model' is a parallel to that of Jung. Jung was very religious and conversant with Eastern religion so it wouldn't surprise me if he plagiarised it.

Ego and identity are useful tools to function for ourselves in relation to others, and in society. We may build them up as nouns, as fixed identities. Ego is an agreed-upon experience of sorts, but it does not exist by itself, and like so many nouns it usually rests on essentialist assumptions.
