Lunar Cycles and Magic
Hello Everyone,
I'm new to Wiccan practices, but have an interest in the lunar cycles and how it may affect people's practices. The New Moon is tomorrow, which is supposed to be good for visualising new beginnings and manifesting them. Does anyone have any recommendations for a beginner? Are you planning anything special yourself tomorrow? StarSeeker |
StarSeeker. The calendars call it the new moon but if you look at charts of the moon cycles you will notice that the picture shown of the new moon is all black indicating that you cannot see any sign of the moon on that night or the next night. In the magical world that is actually called the Dark Moon and the energies of the dark moon are beneficial for hexing/cursing and going inwards. Then the next night, when you can see the tiniest sliver of a crescent moon in the sky - then you can start doing working/spells for bringing those things to you that you desire. And the waxing phase of the moon, as it grows larger each night you can keep working those spells and on up to the full moon. Then after the full moon, the moon will begin to wane and as it becomes smaller you can work spells to cleanse things and banish negative energies and release and banish those things (and people, if you so desire) you no longer want/need in your life, right on up to the dark moon. And so the cycles continue. Unfortunately, people see memes all over the place to set intentions on the new moon and don't realize they're actually working on a dark m oon, consequently working against the moon's energies.

Interested here to learn more about the lunar cycles and how to work with it. :) |
If, by new intentions you mean start a new project or start a spell to bring something to you then a couple of nights after the new moon, when you can see the first sliver of a new crescent moon is the perfect time for that. When the moon is waxing work to bring things to you; when the moon is waning and getting smaller, work to release or banish things/people; when the moon is dark it's a great time for curses/hexes/banishings and doing shadow work.

Samhain begins tomorrow night on Halloween. This year is special, we also have a Blue Moon (2nd full moon in the month).
This would be a great time to put your crystals, etc. outside to get charged by the Blue Moon. While doing that, you can also make some special Blue Moon Water that you can use for consecrating your tools, handfasts, and other rituals. |
Just in case anyone is interested;
A sidereal month - the orbit of the moon around the Earth in days is 27.3 The average duration of pregnancy in humans in days is 273 The ratio of the moon's radius to that of Earth is 0.273 The moon's acceleration on the orbit of the Earth is in cm/s2 0.273 Absolute zero in centigrade is -273 Temperature of background radiation in the universe in 2.73 Kelvin There are other examples ; from 'A Better History of the World, volume 3, Death' by Walter van Laack. Here is another number which occur repeatedly in nature.
Also from Van Laack. Walter Van Laack is a doctor and a mathematician. Some of his books are available in English. Google. The number 168: The distance between the spirals of a snail shell Structure of petals and pine cones The distance between the spiral arms of a galaxy Distances between the sun and the planets Ratio of revolution of planets in our solar system Ratio of length of arms to width of shoulders in humans Ratio between finger phalanxes Just a few examples to show that the universe is a reflection of mathematical principles. |
