Can a non-hindu become a hindu?

I am curious if non-hindu's can become a Hindu? I heard some Hindu people say it's not possible. What are your thoughts?

I would say yes you can, I would think they would want you to read up on their teachings etc,

Namaste

My thoughts? Well, there is no 'organization'...like a church, elders in charge of anything...right?
So who would say?

I’d say, it’s not a label, being Hindu but rather a way of life, embedded in culture. How can we snap our fingers and meld with any culture overnight? Reflex responses, ingrained in the subconscious mind …

Taking a step back, become a Hindu to what end? I was born a Hindu, studied in a Christian school, was drawn to Buddhist teachings and was initiated by the Universe energetically in what may be termed as closer to Tantra or Kashmir Shaivism scriptures, automatically.

I’d say, release, release, release, all conditioning, accepting what unfolds within by becoming receptive and unresistant.

Just saying …

You can convert, if a guru will accept you. Even in India you will see many Western converts. With the idea of transmigration of the soul, it is a given that we are not this body. So... if you are born into an Indian body, American body, male body, female body... what does it matter - those are all temporary labels. If you choose Hinduism as your path, there is no reason for them not to accept you. Unless you find a close minded guru. In that case, find a better guru.

As for the 'Hindu is a culture'... well that is the same thing many Jews say about Judaism, but some sects of Judaism accept converts, some do not. There is the Hindu culture, and the Hindu religion. Same same.

While Historically Hindus have not converted others through any special initiation/rituals (part due to snobbish attitude of Brahmins and part due to lack of proper knowledge about Hinduism itself) , any person with allegiance to a Guru , can obtain a Guru mantra , be a disciple and be a Hindu . But currently not much is in vogue in that area.
