Kundalini Rising
Greetings...
I'm not an expert on Kundalini but I wanted to open a thread where I and others could share our knowledge and experience of it. Kundalini is a spiritual fire energy that in most people is dormant from birth and lies curled at the root of the body until something - a meditation practice, a soul mate meeting, or some other catalyst - activates it. The energy then 'wakes up' and begins to move upward through central energy channels called the Sushumna, which is alongside or inside the spinal cord... and Ida and Pingala, which spiral around the sushumna in a double helix. (Like two serpents, the form of DNA, and the medical symbol, the Caduseus.) The kundalini flow moves up through each of the chakras in succession until it reaches the crown. This takes place in a number of stages, which vary from one person to another. When this is going on... usually for a few weeks or months... a person may have a variety of unusual sensations and experiences from time to time, such as the body heating or cooling, vibrations and shaking, stirred up emotions and moods, changes in diet and sleeping habits, rashes or illnesses, dreams and visions, a sense of expanded or deepened awareness, a change of interests, increased or decreased sexual involvement, and many other signs. These come with varying degrees of discomfort, and sometimes can be quite frightening. With understanding that this is a valuable part of our spiritual awakening we can handle the energy shifts better and with less fear. In addition, there are ways we can ease through them... with conscious belly breathing...and with becoming more present and simply accepting whatever is happening, realizing that it's temporary and won't last. Kundalini awakes and arises as part of our spiritual awakening, and is not very predictable in its effects as each of us is a unique individual configuration of energy and consciousness. It helps to realize that our higher self is in charge of our awakening and transformation. Gradually we can come to know our higher / true Self directly and intimately, and to trust in that. Xan |

I think ;
everbody knows this kind of information regarding to koundalina; this not case ; the case is ;nobody can awaken kundalina even using some methods; So What is the best practical method to awaken kundalina ? |
relaXman... I think most people don't know much about kundalini at all, and are often surprised and frightened when it spontaneously begins to arise.
In fact, I caution people against 'trying' to awaken kundalini but going for meditation, microcosmic orbit, chakra clearing and possibly gentle sushumna circulating practices to expand and deepen their awareness and energy flows... and let kundalini and other energy activations come along as they will, in right timing. I agree, this is a great thread to have, perhaps everyone can compile lots of support for those going through kundalini awakening.
Kundalini in sanskrit means "coiled", and Shakti, is believed to be a goddess, or sometimes portrayed as a serpent, which is coiled up at the base of the spine, during kundalini awakening, Shakti uncoils all the way up the spine. It lasts for a certain amount of time? That sort of defeats the purpose of awakening. An awakening doesn't die out, once awakened, the goal is to be always awake. Uncomfortable side effects and symptoms may cease, but the energies should be awake forever. A person will be able to easily have kundalini whenever they want, while still sticking to the balance of all chakras. This is why it's probably important to learn to control the kundalini. "The goal of Tantra is to have the kundalini remain permanently elevated to the topmost psychoenergetic center, which state coincides with liberation. At the beginning, however, the kundalini will tend to return to the cakra at the base of the spine, because the body-mind is not yet adequately prepared. Therefore the practitioner must repeatedly invite the Goddess power to unite with her divine spouse, Shiva, at the top of Mount Kailasa, that is, in the sahasrara-cakra. This will gradually remove the karmic inclination toward identifying with the body-mind rather than Shiva-Shakti as one's ultimate identity. In Kashmiri Tantra, this ever-blissful transcendental identity is called aham ("I") versus the finite ego (ahamkara, "I-maker"), which is driven by the desire to maximize pleasure and minimize pain and yet continuously sows the seeds of suffering." And once one is truly awakened Fully from Kundalini, they reach the climax of cosmic life. The stage of Nirvikalpa Samadhi, their whole life is changed, and they have a permanent enlightenment, permanent communication, with their higher power, it is said, in the last 150 years of history only two have actually achieved this full awakening. They were Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa and Maharishi Ramana. Both these gentlemen awakened their Kundalini in their lifetime and gained enlightenment and finally salvation, thus they do not have to be reincarnated ever again. It's not like Kundalini just stops, and by the time it does, you are most likely dead and reunited with the divine. |

Thanks in progress. I hoped you would show up and maybe say a few words about your own experience, because I feel you have a clear and balanced view of it.

All the above are great links which I have read in the past months. I'd like to share another one which I find is a good explanation of the kundalini process

I have not had a full kundalini awakening yet, but I have experienced its energy rising during meditation a number of times. The first time it happened it was incredibly powerful and did quite frighten me (I remember that it felt like it was setting light to each of my chakras - every time it reached a new chakra there was this huge powerful whoomph of energy). I also remember that when the energy moved down my arms there was a big whoosh of energy out of my hands, too. But at the point where I began to feel afraid, it died away. I have the impression now that my guides or angels were helping me and calmed its energy when I reacted that way.
My experiences since then have been very gentle and much more healing rather than explosive - it feels very pleasant moving up and down my spine. I can feel it fizzling away at energetic blockages and healing me. I did undergo a lot of changes with all this powerful energy work. It's some time since I felt it and I don't feel it's quite the right time for my full awakening yet, though I know it will happen and am happy for that to be whenever is appropriate. Thank you for the informative thread. There is so little information out there about such an important and life-changing phenomenon. Alarmingly little, really. |
How do you know if it is a full blown or partial?
I have been told that I have my K awakened and it is months that I am trying to understand my situation. I feel all my chakras are opened and the energy rises 24/7 and goes out from the top of my head. I cannot read, or do much work or it causes a lot of energy to go up and I can feel my third eye pulsating even with my eyes opened. I have read about the symptoms and I wouldn't say I have all of them, but I guess some of the symptoms, like the body shaking are symptoms of partial awakening. |
Hi Xan and everybody,
Thanks for reopening a discussion on Kundalini since the last one got wiped out by the great computer crash of 2009! I am a student of Sri Vasudeva who speaks and writes of Kundalini and of the great value of this knowledge in our day to day lives - for everybody, not only those actively seeking enlightenment. He believes that Kundalini experiences are the essence of ALL spiritual experiences - and I agree. I transcribed and studied his works for the last decade and my tarot cards are based on his profound teachings. So I am a serious student of Kundalini - both as a researcher of Sri Vasudeva's work and of my own personal Kundalini experience. I am happy to share whatever knowledge I have with anyone who asks or refer you to his website www.blue-star.org where you'll find lots of workshops online related to Kundalini. He is actually available to answer questions directly as well. If people understood the real meaning and potential of Kundalini, everyone would be rushing to find out more. It is a highly misunderstood principle. |

My awakening was pretty boring compared w/ a lot of others you hear about (not complaining! I'm a chicken). I was essentially the same "me" before, during and after. I didn't see God or get a bliss hit. I never felt a freight train shoot up my spine either. I've had spiritual epiphanies (particularly when the energy is up) and lesser bliss hits, feelings of love in ways I hadn't felt before. I had some dreams about it so I knew I was going to have a kundalini experience but I didn't know when. Predictive dreams about K. are common from what I understand. I had "top down" energy first. My crown opened and I could feel the vibration move down my body. It felt flu-like for the first few days. When the "top down" energy reached my feet I could feel energy start to come in through my feet. Eventually kundalini was triggered. My chakras weren't opened in order. I saw bluish white light start to glow from my upper body, white light in my head coming out around my eyes, then it coalesced into a ball of white light that shot out of my head in a spiral. In that same moment I heard an electrical crackle and I could see to the left, ahead and through the top of my head simultaneously. I also watched myself as if standing to my right. My entire body vibrated heavily for about an hour after that. A week later my lower chakras opened. I felt a sensation of liquid flowing down my left side and up the center of my body one night. The next night is was down the other side and up. For about a month after that the energy was rather chaotic and sometimes a bit tooth rattling but it got easier. I go through cycles of upgrades and breaks. Each upgrade seems to have focuses of attention. The energy has felt quite strong sometimes. It's scared me a bit. It's easy to see why it can cause problems. Sometimes I felt like a high voltage cable barely containing the energy. It feels electrical. That said I don't discourage people from pursuing a kundalini awakening but I'd do it through meditation or yoga etc, not try to force it but allow it to happen. I feel certain meditation played a major role in my case. I also had an evening of talking to "god" and surrendering, wanting to change me but knowing I needed help doing it. It was that evening I got a knowing things were going to change. Kundalini rose about six months later. Things can change quickly! |

Edy... I think it's safe to say that very few people on the planet have fully developed kundalini. I suspect those who believe their kundalini awakening was "full blown" mean it was very intense and went all through their body and chakras. In my view, kundalini and our other energy flows evolve gradually over years of time, with the first phases usually the most noticeable and disturbing. Xan |
Thank you, in progress.
Your description is a good example of how unpredictable and variable our kundalini, and other, awakenings can be. Xan |

I want to share also what I did to ground myself. The first 1.5 months it was impossible for me to ground myself, whatever I did wasn't enough, I was a lot above my head and it was a bit unpleasant. During the nights I had so much energy that I felt like I was levitating. I had some spiritual experiences (and I was very inexperienced) and a couple of those scared me, now that I think of them they weren't bad but you probably know the word "Everybody wants to be spiritual until they start experiencing it" I decided I needed to do more for grounding, so I went and got myself a black tourmaline pendant. I started wearing this for about 10 min. a day. Never had experiences with crystals, but this one was very powerful. It took my energy down to the bottom of the spine, during the night I felt the energy flowing back up going through my chakras again. In the same time the rapid grounding gave me strong headaches. After 4-5 days of using it, I felt what I would say as my Earth Star chakra opened. For 2-3 days I had energies going down like crazy, much more rapidly than when they started to go up. From that day on, I have never had any problem grounding myself. It just happens naturally. When I wake up, the energies go down by itself, I don't have to do anything. It's enough for me to put my feet on the floor. I hope this helps somebody else too. I have also read that a lot of people who think have a K awakening, don't. That's why I am not sure what I have :) Edy |
Moving the physical body is grounding. I don't feel the energies while I'm moving around. There is one exception and that happened early on while the energies were still chaotic. At that time they would respond to my emotional state and what I was reading. They would also get very strong during meditation so I took a break from it for awhile. And they'd get very strong at night when I was trying to sleep but I couldn't take a break from that!
The exception was when I was reading a post about astral planes here. I suddenly had a lot of vibration. I had to drive back to work, had an amrita experience while driving and my vision went crazy at work. I was trying to walk around to relieve the experience but it didn't help that time. A friend told me later I might have been integrating a truth about what I was reading. |
When I am experiencing an energy shift of one kind of another, I find that going for a steady rhythmic walk of at least 20 minutes helps to smooth out and integrate it quickly and easily.

A practice that may help bring on kundalini awakening, or balance and smooth it after it has begun, is Microcosmic Orbit - http://www.spiritualforums.com/vb/showthread.php?t=3682

The Kundalini rising takes a long time to complete, many lifetimes probably.
I don't have much knowledge about the soul and spirit, and I am curious to know, when we die does the Kundalini rising continue, or will it stop until we reincarnate again and of course if we decide to reawaken it in our next reincarnation. Another question is, the goal is to raise Kundalini all the way and to pierce the Bindu, so that we can be one with the Absolute. The yogis advise that you need to continue pushing the energy up so that you reach that goal. The regular person, regular here meaning a person whose path is not meditation, or that has a spontaneous K awakening, he will not try and raise the energy. In the past many people with awakened K, did not know what they had, there was no internet or some other way of knowing, and most times they were considered as schizophrenic. In these cases K goes back to sleep after some time, it can be days, months or years. Does this person achieve something, or does it depend on how the person defines the experience. Thanks for any input. |

Yes you pick up where you left off as soon as something triggers a remembering. Quote:
Kundalini is awakened in everybody to SOME degree or we would be dead. When it is awakened in the sushumna, that is when the real spiritual journey begins. The ultimate goal is to become anchored in the crown chakra, not the bindu. At the crown chakra we have a choice - to leave the human body forever and merge into VOID or to stay earthbound and help others. You don't have to have a goal or even know about Kundalini to reach anywhere. All paths lead to the same place. Kundalini knowledge is about our spiritual anatomy - what goes on behind the scenes. The Kundalini will go back to sleep if it is not stabilized at the brow chakra. The most powerful charismatic people in the world are at least at the brow. Only a few like Christ attained the crown and came back to tell us about it. Kundalini is the real you - the power of God, the Divine part of you trying to identify with that which is greater than the small body-mind. Everyone gets excited about the dramatics of awakenings but the real adventure is in opening up to an entirely new consciousness, an expanded state of being. Does this answer your questions? p.s. Bet you didn't know the Christmas tree represents the energy body fully awakened - crown chakra attained and all other chakras operating at 100% efficiency. THAT is the TRUE MEANING of Christmas! Even the Christians don't realize this LOL! |
Thanks for the reply Uma, appreciated.
Didn't know about the Christmas tree, interesting! |
Edy: Another question is, the goal is to raise Kundalini all the way and to pierce the Bindu, so that we can be one with the Absolute. The yogis advise that you need to continue pushing the energy up so that you reach that goal.
Edy... It is not necessary to raise Kundalini first in order to become aware in absolute Oneness. The yogi tradition doesn't always apply, especially in this new time of spiritual awakening through other non-yogic practices... and even spontaneously, by Grace. Xan |
Just to add to what Xan said...trying to force Kundalini energy through yogic practices is unnecessary and also could be DANGEROUS if attempted without proper guidance. In the presence of one who has it awakened, it can arise spontaneously, naturally and perfectly safely, if the desire in recipient is great and their heart is pure and they have been doing things of a devotional nature. It really only becomes unsafe when forced.
The analogy Sri Vasudeva gives is of power transformers that step down the high voltage so that energy enters your home safely so you can switch on lights and things. So too, the energy of the entire universe needs to come through you gradually as your transformers (chakras) open, develop and stabilize. If you tried to make a direct connection without the proper equipment, you'd blow up your house. |
If you tried to make a direct connection without the proper equipment, you'd blow up your house.
Or at least feel like it (your body-mind) is on the verge of blowing up. Xan |

spontaneous by grace, so it is grace for the reason why this happens with out trying to make it happen. huh. |
i had my first one when i was five, it was pretty violent, my body levitated up and down after i shook very hard. my poor mom was terrified, the second time it happened i was in my late twenties, that time it was the most relaxing energy i have ever felt. i did not try to do this awakening, it just happened.
my friend was over the other week and we were talking about spiritual stuff and i started to feel a vibration with in me, but i did not shake on the outside, i told her this and she said this is what she feels when the holy spirit is with her. she said she was feeling it right then. very interesting. one day i look forward to communing with her when the vibration stops and she feels the calm, the stillness of the "holy spirit" |
Yup..... Grace...
Of course Grace may also bring us a method to use. Xan |
Quote:
i dont understand that, what do you mean? |
Gracey... For me sometimes there is stillness and sometimes vibration. Grace is not all that predictable.
Xan |
Quote:
okay, i dont feel any vibrations. to each their own experience. |
Gracey: i dont understand that, what do you mean?
I mean, universal divine presence emanates to us in many ways... sometimes directly through experiences and awareness beyond the mind, and sometimes indirectly by arranging a significant meeting, or bringing us something we can understand or do or practice to open our mind and heart for further awakening. Xan |
okay gotcha, thanks.
|
If you don't mind another question :)
I have been experiencing this for almost 4 months now. It's getting better I guess. I cannot read or work more than 20 min. without taking a break and grounding the energies. I have read some stories that this inability to read has been going on for years for some people. Do you have any idea about this, what can I do to integrate it a bit more. Thanks a lot! |
Quote:
Hi Gracey, The body shakes are usually related to the root chakra - the spiritual centre for grounding (but they can be part of any chakra that is really blocked). I'm guessing that once you became more grounded, the energy could flow higher - so no more shaking. Your experience is interesting also because in TM (Transcendental Meditation) they actually teach levitation and it begins with the body (in meditation posture) jumping or hopping up and down and across the room and eventually levitating. It make me think that perhaps this was a pursuit of yours in a past life (just a guess). I've heard this type of experience being compared to a garden hose all coiled and sort of knotted up - once you turn the tap on the hose begins to shake like crazy until the water can flow smoothly again. That's the idea. We can learn how to manage experiences like these if they get uncomfortable or are inappropriate in certain surroundings. That's why it's so important to focus on getting the brow chakra opened as it commands all the ones below it. Hence the emphasis in meditation on controlling the mind - one pointedness, watching the breath, repeating a mantra etc... Uma |
Quote:
Maybe you're too much in the mind...too much thinking. Try going for a walk or doing something physical for a change. Or get some sleep. |
Quote:
hi uma, i have heard of the jumping or hopping, mine was not like that, i was laying flat on my back and rising up and down of about 3 or 4 feet. after the shaking and during the levitating, my energy felt calm, but i felt objecitve because i was just five and had no idea what was going on. |
Quote:
Edy... I had this inability to read for a while, especially boring stuff. So when I really needed or wanted to I read out loud to myself, which worked well. Otherwise I didn't figure it was important and let it go. Xan |
Quote:
However, as far as I know reading is a way to cope with the energy, so I don't think what I am experiencing is not normal. |
Reading is one way to cope with the energy... one which perhaps isn't appropriate for you right now.
With the consciousness and energy shifts of awakening it's best to accept and allow what's happening for you, rather than clinging to old ways and ideas. Xan |
