Why Sleep Paralysis Makes You See Ghosts

Quote:

But out-of-body experiences can reliably be reproduced in the laboratory. We simply disrupt a brain region called the “temporoparietal junction” in the parietal lobes (top-middle part). This area helps build your “body image” and is important for your ability to distinguish between “self” and “other.”

I've had sleep paralysis a few times over the years, so did my dad before me.
He used to see lights in the room as well, but with me it was just a case of thinking I was awake but unable to move.
The way to come out of it for me is to not panic and to try and relax then it slowly goes away.
Perhaps we're still asleep and just think we're awake, I'm not sure really because it seems real when it happens.

ThatMan 14-03-2023 06:09 AM

@Albert100 Next time when you experience sleep paralysis, if you can manage to relax, think of leaving body, floating out of the body, just have this thought, and you will see "real" magic happen which will blow your mind and all you know about reality.

Sleep paralysis is like a middle place between the waking and the dreaming but you can bypass the dreaming and go into other dimensions.

Took me some time to learn to relax when experiencing sleep paralysis, to the point that if I were to see something scary it would not scare me at all because I've learned to relax.. We fear the unknown..

I thought the usual theme was aliens or a witch sitting on your chest (which is why you think you can't move) hence the name "night mare". Never thought about ghosts though! I did once see one in bed as a child and perhaps I was in SP at the time. I used to get night terrors too (similar thing I think) and I remember an alien presence. Don't they think a lot of "alien abduction" stories are just plain old sleep paralysis phenomena? I thought it's just dream imagery that turns nightmarish because you're awake but can't move so your mind freaks out, so you think demons/ghosts/aliens/witches are holding you down. Interesting article but a bit of a buzzkill for me, takes all the magic out of it but then that's science for you! Although I would volunteer to have a lab OBE if they are offering!

@ThatMan definitely, those that want OBE's actually try to get into the SP state. Do you get vibrations with it? I'd love it if you have any tips for how to get into it, as it's been a while since I experienced it. And yes nothing at all to be scared of, you have to just ignore all the "noise". Sadly I think most people really just want to be able to break out of it not realising how useful it is (not me though, I'm gonna turn it into an OBE if I can!)

That man, I'll try that, thanks for your reply.
The first time it happened it was daytime, quite hot outside and I remember it well.
I came home from work and fell asleep on the bed in the afternoon.
This was about 1985 time, so quite a long time a go now.
The last time was last year, about October.

I talked about one OBE I had where I could see my astral body hands and forearms during sleep paralysis.

Note the part about my cat, too.
I wonder if the sleep paralysis enabled me to see my astral body arms and hands and if someone else in my room could have seen what I saw. Also, I remember my grandmother claiming she saw angels shortly before she died. She kept asking people if they saw the angels and, apparently no one else did.

I read the so called experiment and it didn't sound like an OBE at all-what a disappointment!

There is an interesting article in BBC News this morning relating to sleep paralysis.
It happens when only part of the brain is awake. This semi-state can also cause hallucinations such as aliens, angels, religious experiences and such.

When it happened to me, decades ago, I had to fight off a succubus. Never forgotten!

Redchic12 25-04-2023 04:03 PM

Busby. Yep I’ve had the same and never forgotten it either.

Sleep paralysis is special to me lol. It also seems to be a unique time when the mind is turned down enough but awareness is open enough to see other beings or at least meet them "halfway" for communication.

Some argue it's the imagination, I say imagination is something we create with but the hallucinations in sleep paralysis are coming on their own accord, if even created from the unconscious mind.

This is a state where also it seems our vayus (internal currents) are played with by other intelligences. I've been involuntarily paralyzed by manipulating these internal energies.

aiken 25-08-2023 07:41 AM

well, this sounds like something out of a horror movie, experiences like this called sleep paralysis are quite common as shown in our research in more than six countries. in this paralyses you try to scream but you can't even move! I imagine waking up in pitch darkness, paralyzed from head to toe! isn't it so scary?

There's no reason to be afraid but it takes ALLOT of getting used to lol.
I'd say to people also that if they find themselves at this point it should be celebrated and not anything to be scared of.

The body chemically paralyzes itself and is natural. If you can exploit this intelligence through the yoga nidra practice you can reach the state consciously.
You'll see lights, feel vibrations, etc... I would personally disregard any phenomena as just a passing curiosity otherwise you'll get scared and pulled out of it.

I don't understand why they call that "sleep paralysis". The people I know who have that experience repeatedly, are actively fighting off some kind of demon. They describe how they were flailing their arms at this thing. This is common in Russia and Ukraine; they call it a "house spirit" that they believe lives in their house or apartment and bothers them at night. The description looks just like the drawings from Medieval Europe. In the drawings, the person is in bed wide awake, fighting off the spirit being. It doesn't look like "paralysis" at all! Not once has someone told me they couldn't move; to the contrary, they describe fighting something off very actively.

I'd appreciate whatever thoughts and perspective you can bring to this.

ThatMan 18-10-2023 05:53 PM

@Seeker1 Based on my experiences that is caused by two 2 things, paralysis and strong pressure on the chest, which may be caused by you trying to breath consciously and not being able to do so for the body is unable to move. It may also be caused, the pressure, by the actual pressure of the bed pushing into your body if one is sleeping on the stomach.

My experiences have shown me that this is fear based, more like the mind going into crazy mode by not moving able to move the physical body ( all sorts of thoughts, like being stuck in that state forever, not being able to see your family, dark presences etc ).. I had hundreds sleep paralysis experiences and I have never seen something on my chest, the demons , the shadow figures and so on, created out of fear, after a while I actually welcomed these experienced. Once I thought the clothes on the hanger are demons, I managed to somehow open an eye, that was funny.

These are just my experiences, if one manages to relax, then an out of body experience is possible and one will never be the same after such an experience.

I’ve never seen ghosts, monsters or anything else supernatural when I had sleep paralysis. I just knew I was awake and couldn’t move.
