Atlantis was invented by Plato some time during the 16th century. But, I don't think we should completely rule out ancestral memory. For example, many of the stories in the bible can be traced back 1000s of years before Jesus was born, for example the Great Flood was well known long before, and perhaps it was even the flood that buried the region that later inspired Atlantis.
