Has anyone ever heard of or know of dragons or dragon-like spirits/spirts which manifest as dragons to the person being protective guardians?

Yes. They are among the non-corporeal entities of our world, like fairies. I have no name for them but I can confirm that in rare cases they do turn up as guides for humans.

They are from the elemental kingdom in my view. Many of those that have dragon experiences see this bond as one of friendship and energetic alignment. I guess if you feel vulnerable then they can be protective guardians.

My son's guardian spirit is a fire dragon. I have physically seen him as a speck of white light, an Asian Dragon in a vision, and as a white haired boy in several of my dreams.

The dragon I've drawn since a child has a mixture of hairs and quills on it's head and running down it's back. Your description is quite interesting to me in that regard!
