Getting Away

Have you ever just sat
In the woods,
In the peace and stillness,
Absorbing it into your being
Until you became a part of it?

Not thinking of your life
And its problems,
Or of your day, and the
A$$hole
That cut you off in traffic.

Not wondering why your son
Came home with green and orange hair,
Or what your daughter
Was really doing until 11:30
Last Saturday night.

Just letting your mind go blank,
With your eyes closed,
Until the sounds around you,
And that of your own heart,
All fade away.

Until the dampness
Of the ground under you,
And the ridges and edges
Of the oak tree you're leaning against,
Cease to exist.

Drifting farther away,
But wide awake,
Until you know what it's like
To be in an isolation chamber,
Or the womb.

And then opened your eyes
To see a grey squirrel
regarding you intently,
His tail flicking back and forth,
Only three feet away,
As if demanding to know
Who gave you permission
To use his tree.

And a sparrow,
Startling in the brilliance
Of its colors,
Perched on your toe.

I love this one, it is a great reminder of reconnecting to the natural world and finding the essence of moving stillness one with all life...
